Jared, Mallory, and Simon Grace arrive at their old Aunt Lucinda's house. She is currently in the hospital with "mental issues". The house is part of a huge estate which includes the surrounding forest. When strange things, such as rhymes on slips of paper and mice in the icebox start to appear, Jared and Simon investigate. While looking around, they discover a mysterious "tap, tap, tap" coming from the wall so they bust down the wall. Inside they find a dumbwaiter leading to their Great Uncle Spiderwick's study.
